Thoughts on Politics, Rome, and the Future
Sometimes the parallels between the United States and Rome are amazing. Both were once the greatest power the world knew in their respective time period, both held great influence over world affairs, both were the centers for politics, culture, learning, and economy, and one met a slow and steady decline ending in total ruin, while the other seems to be on the very same path. It may be an overly used cliche, but history truly does repeat itself; and those who do not learn from it are doomed to repeat it. Many times the leaders who we entrust to run our country cant see past their own power, egos, and political ignorance to properly govern. This happened in Rome and it is surely happening now in our country.
Rome was not conquered overnight by a marauding army that swept in from a foreign land. No Rome crumbled from within because its citizens and leaders became fat, lazy, complacent, and fought among themselves rather than taking care of the problems facing their Republic. They let the Roman infrastructure rot under the weight of a stagnate government and culture. The saying "Panem Et Circenses" comes from Rome. It was a political strategy devised by the Roman leaders. It means "bread and circuses". Those leaders figured as long as the Roman population was fat and entertained they would not hinder policies that the government wanted to pursue. Does any of this seem familiar?
Eventually Rome became a shell of what it once was; a great world power. While the Romans were busy fighting amongst themselves the Visigoths, a branch of the Gothic tribes to the north of Rome, ready themselves for an eventual takeover of Rome. They slowly leaked across the border fighting the Romans where they could. This continued until the Visigoths were at the gates of Rome.
You don't have to use too much imagination to see how our country now is facing nearly the same prospects. On a daily basis the incompetent, impotent, and worthless people we have elected to public office fight amongst themselves rather than taking care of the nations problems. These people are more concerned with pleasing their donors and party than doing what is right for America. It truly makes me sick to think about who we have leading the country right now. I was watching Sen. Sherrod Brown, for about 2 mins today, and all I saw was one more political opportunist hack. He had nothing original to say to me. All I heard from his rotten mouth was the usual party line talking points. What kills me is that there are millions of people out there who will buy this nonsense, from both parties!
The two party system has nearly destroyed any new political thought in this country. The parties, their candidates, and many of the people who work for them are only concerned with maintaining their power. The Democrat Party is sounding more and more like a defeatist Euro-Socialist party everyday. The Republican Party was once the home for true conservative thought. That died with Ronald Reagan. Now we have a globalist who can do almost nothing right and has nearly killed any chance of a true conservative getting elected in 2008. George Bush wants an open border than can facilitate the flow of cheap labor across national boundaries. I have no problem at all with companies making as much money as they can, because that is what drives our economy (or atleast that is what should drive it). But to do it at the expense of our national security is a crime.
I can barely express my disgust for the Democrats. I have never seen a larger group of whining, thoughtless, misguided, posturing, do-nothing Socialists in my entire life. If this is the only other option to a Republican Party that is bankrupt of any true Conservative thought, then God help us all. If they could even be a rational American party that could truly give the GOP a run for their money then maybe we wouldn't be in the state we are right now. Instead they are more concerned with telling you what light bulbs to use and telling people who want us dead that we are defeated. The last decent elected Democrat is sitting in a Federal prison somewhere. James Traficant.
We are Rome and I fear that we will meet the same fate as Rome. No nation has reigned supreme forever. Even the once mighty British Empire has been reduced to nothingness. If we cant see what our leaders are doing to us now, and hold them accountable for their actions we will face the fate as Rome.
Remember, while they may be selfish hacks, you do have the final say in who gets elected in this country. Use that power wisely. |
